Our recommendation for properly feeding your puppy is to use a high protein large breed puppy food until the puppy reaches the age of 12 months. After 12 months of age, you can slowly transition your puppy to large breed adult dog food by mixing the puppy food with adult dog food over a span of 3-5 days.
We feed our puppies Purina Pro Plan Large breed puppy food (top left) and Purina Pro Plan Focus (top right) to our adult dogs. We prefer the chicken and rice formula, however any of the Purina Pro Plan dog food products should be sufficient enough for your puppy/dog as they grow up. This particular brand of food was both recommended to us by our routine veterinarian and our veterinarian that specializes in reproduction health. Our repro vet has been feeding her show dogs the same food over several generations. She speaks highly of this dog food company because they have had extensive scientific studies conducted regarding the quality and safety of their ingredients. Other companies that have also had similar studies conducted and are considered higher quality dog food include: Royal Canin and Hills Science Diet. At this point in time there have not been any reported cases of DCM (Dilated Cardiomyopathy) in conjunction to these brands compared to grain free dog food brands on the market.
"In July 2018, the FDA announced that it had begun investigating reports of canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs eating certain pet foods, many labeled as "grain-free," which contained a high proportion of peas, lentils, other legume seeds (pulses), and/or potatoes in various forms (whole, flour, protein, etc.) as main ingredients (listed within the first 10 ingredients in the ingredient list, before vitamins and minerals)." They found more cases in Golden Retrievers (see graph below) compared to other breeds and the food did in fact contain those ingredients (see graph below). When our puppies go home to their new owners, we provide them with a small bag of Purina Pro Plan Large breed puppy food. We don't require you to feed your dog the same food (still highly recommend it!) but require that you choose a brand that is approved by a veterinarian that will meet all of your dog's nutritional needs. We have been asked about raw diets and i honestly can't tell you much because we have only fed our dog's kibble.
