The Do's And Dont's With Your New Puppy

The Do's:
  • DO stay in contact with your breeder.  We love to see pictures and receive feedback!
  •  DO give your puppy plenty of age appropriate exercise. Remember that a tired puppy is a happy puppy!
  • DO be patient with your new puppy.  This is their first time away from the litter so they could be nervous.
  • DO take your puppy to the bathroom often.  They simply cannot hold it at this age. For every 1 month of age, your puppy will be able to hold it for roughly 1-2 extra hours.
  • DO Keep your puppy separated from all other house pets initially. Slowly introduce them to each other.
  • DO use positive reinforcement with happy words, happy tone of voice, and treats for training.
  • DO Keep your puppy crate close to where you sleep at night. This way you can hear them bark or wine when they need to use the bathroom.
  • DO take away their water 1-2 hours before bedtime.  This will allow them to get more sleep and empty their bladder early on.
  • DO keep their world small for the first few weeks until they become more comfortable.
  • DO feed your puppy up to 3 times a day if you are home and provide access to plenty of water.
  • DO take your puppy to the vet within the first week for a physical exam.
  • DO keep a consistent schedule.  Try to feed your puppy followed by a bathroom break. This will help them learn a routine.
  • DO pay attention to what your puppy is eating. There are a lot of food and household items that could be harmful to your pet.
The Dont's:
  • Don't get a puppy unless you are fully prepared to take care of them.  They are a lot of work at first, but very rewarding for the rest of their life!
  • Don't hesitate to call your breeder with any questions or concerns. We are here to help you!
  • Don't take your puppy to any dog parks and dog stores until they have all of their vaccines.
  • Don't reprimand your puppy for the first 2 weeks. Let this time be about bonding and allowing your pet to adjust to their new home.
  • Don't change your puppy food too fast. This will upset their stomach. We recommend waiting at least 2 weeks after they go to their new home.
  • Don't leave your puppy outside for long periods of time. They can get cold or overheat very quickly.
  • Don't lock our dog in a crate or in a room alone for extended periods of time.
  • Don't leave your puppy on high furniture or tables.  If they jump off, this can cause them to get seriously injured.
  • Don't let your dog run next to a bicycle. One wrong turn can seriously injure your puppy.
  • Don't allow a very young child to handle your puppy unsupervised.
  • Don't rush to their side every time they bark.  This will encourage them to bark more. Instead, give them rewards and attention when they don't bark.
  • Don't be afraid to let your puppy play alone for some time.  This will teach them independence. Puppies will need to learn how to entertain themselves as they get older.
